"The modern reconstruction (1954-1957) of the old Herzog Max Castle, destroyed in World War II, polarized the citizens of Munich like no other building project in the post-war period. (...) In 1971, the architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner praised the Maxburg as "a model for Europe of how old and new can live together without compromise and yet harmoniously."
In the current discussion about the reconstruction of entire old towns, the Maxburg is once again gaining special significance as a modernly designed urban space with historical references. The complex, which is unparalleled anywhere in Germany, is open to the public, the interior and exterior flow into one another, and the tower of the old Maxburg corresponds with the new building as a scale-setting element. The exhibition uses photos, texts and film clips to tell the story of the Maxburg. "
